Like many American passenger ships, the Mongolia was later pressed into duty during WWI. Just three years after Hettie Belle’s voyage, the ship was shifted to the Atlantic and equipped with Navy-manned guns. In 1917, her crew fought off a German submarine, the first US engagement in WWI. After that, the USS Mongolia became a military transport ship, taking troops to war and then home after the armistice in 1918. Her sister ship was the SS Manchuria.51
